The Limited Edition 1/72 scale kit depicts the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.Vb, one of the most iconic British fighters of the Second World War. This boxing allows you to build aircraft flown by RAF pilots of several nationalities during operations over German‑occupied Western Europe.

History

The Supermarine Spitfire is widely regarded as the most famous British fighter of WWII. Designed by R.J. Mitchell, it was an all‑metal, low‑wing monoplane distinguished by its elegant elliptical wings, classic tail layout, and fully retractable landing gear. The prototype first flew on 5 March 1936, and by 1938 the first production aircraft were entering RAF service.

When the Battle of Britain began in the summer of 1940, nineteen Spitfire squadrons were already operational, forming a crucial part of the 600‑strong fighter force defending the UK alongside the Hawker Hurricane. As the war expanded, the Spitfire served in every major RAF theatre—North Africa, Italy, the Far East, the Normandy landings, the liberation of France, and the final push into Germany.

Over its long production life, the Spitfire evolved through numerous variants. Early marks such as the Spitfire Mk.I, powered by the 1,030 hp Rolls‑Royce Merlin II, proved decisive during the Battle of Britain. Reconnaissance versions like the PR Mk.IA and PR.IG soon followed.

The Spitfire Mk.V, introduced in 1941, was developed in response to the appearance of the Messerschmitt Bf 109F. Powered by the Merlin 45 (later the Merlin 50), it became one of the most widely produced and successful variants. Later developments included the Spitfire Mk.IX with the two‑stage‑supercharged Merlin 61 and four‑blade propeller—designed to counter the Focke‑Wulf Fw 190—and the powerful Griffon‑engined Mk.XIV. Production continued into the final months of the war with strengthened, redesigned versions such as the Mk.21.
